The Great British Bake Off kicked off its 14th series with a hilarious re-enactment of a scene from The Godfather - with the opening credit reading, 'Bake Off Pictures Presents The Breadfather.'
The hit Channel 4 series marked the arrival of vivacious new host Alison Hammond, who joined fellow host Noel Fielding and judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith the short film inspired intro, based on the 1975 blockbuster.
Before the latest bakers were tasked to create a vertical cake infused with buttercream, Paul Hollywood looked dapper in a black tuxedo as 'Don Pauleone.'
Noel was then introduced as Noel Focaccia, Alison went by the alias 'Alison Cannoli-mond,' and Prue made her grand entrance as 'Pane di Leith' - sporting a classic pair of red coloured glasses to accompany the her mob-inspired attire.
It comes after Prue released her own range of vibrant, colourful spectacles, Specs by Prue, with MAC Eyewear in 2022 - but what is the real reason bright and quirky glasses have become the chef and Bake Off star's iconic go-to?
Iconic look: Prue Leith, 83, has become known for wearing fabulously bold eyewear during The Great British Bake Off
In 2019, Prue, 83, expressed her wish to launch her very own glasses range, after becoming known for wearing fabulously bold eyewear during The Great British Bake Off.
The restaurateur has said she wanted to inspire older women who were 'delighted' with her fashion sense.
Speaking at the Hay Festival, she said: 'Since I’ve been doing Great British Menu and Bake Off, there are thousands of women over 50 who are absolutely delighted that somebody so old wears bright colours and funky necklaces and mad glasses.'
Prue joined forces with artist and eyewear designer Ronit Furst in 2019 to create an exclusive eyewear collection after wearing Ronit’s designs for over 12 years.
Specs by Prue was born in 2022 - an exclusive eyewear collection featuring an array of brightly coloured, abstract frames personally designed by Prue.
Having worn glasses for over 50 years, it is Prue's love of colour that has inspired the range of colourful frames.
From neon greens to fuchsias to royal blues, from multi layer laminated acetate to classic eyewear designs, the collection is for anyone partial to adding a pop of colour to their outfits.
In an interview with Optometry Today at The Association of Optometrists in April 2023, Prue Leith spoke about her new frame range, as well as her longstanding love of colour.
Vibrant style: Prue released Specs by Prue with MAC Eyewear in 2022 - a 75 pair collection of different style and colour combinations, such as designs of neon green, fuchsia and royal blue
Explaining the design process behind Specs by Prue, she said: 'So we have 75 different styles and colour combinations.
'It’s another opportunity for more colour, which suits me. I choose the shape and then I sit down with Jane [Galpin, Leith’s stylist and producer], who helps me with everything I wear and my necklaces, and she and I put the colours in.'
Prue, who owns 'at least 10 pairs' of spectacles, revealed that a colourful frame is important to her as it helps her feel more positive while it completes her outfits.
She said: 'My glasses are so much a part of me that I don't feel dressed without them. They also give me a mood boost.'
When the Bake Off star was then asked about why she wears colourful glasses, she responded: 'I’ve been into colour long before you could get anything in colour.
'I started wanting to get into the eyewear business because I couldn’t get anything really brightly coloured. You still see people getting off the Tube in nothing but black coats in winter. Nothing but black glasses, or very few.
'I always like multicolours because they help with what you’re wearing. You can pick out any colour you’re wearing. I could wear glasses with blue or yellow.'
Pretty in pink: Prue admits that she prefers a collection of coloured glasses over handbags and shoes as people are more likely to pay attention to frames on someone's face first
Prue then admitted that she prefers a collection of coloured glasses over handbags and shoes as people are more likely to pay attention to frames on someone's face first.
She explained: 'Shoes and handbags are what women think it’s fine to spend huge amounts of money on. But where do they go? They’re under the table, or they’re in the cupboard.
'Whereas, your specs are bang on your face, exactly where everybody looks at you. And the same with necklaces. I’m for specs, necklaces and earrings – everything where you can see it.'
Asked if the choice of glasses represents the wearers style or personality, Prue confirmed: 'I think spectacles say a lot about the wearer.
I hope I am optimistic, quite original and artistic, up for fun and confident. I fear I am also a bit of an egotist.
Prue then gave some advice for those who are apprehensive in taking the leap to sport a vibrant accessory on their face for the first time.
She urged: 'Be a bit brave and force yourself to put on a pair that you think is too bold for you.
Then have a look in the mirror and if it makes you smile, that's the one for you. And don't worry if it "won't go with everything." It will.'
