Barnsley's new home kit has caused quite the storm on social media - for all the wrong reasons.
The League One side proudly unveiled their new strips on Thursday but were met with a tsunami of incredulity and plenty of mocking comments.
For many, the home kit in particular - part of a range of shirts 'drawing inspiration from the rich history of Barnsley FC' - felt more star-spangled than south Yorkshire.
The kit, adorned with US Mobile's eagle and USA flag logo, complemented with gigantic stars, reminded many of strips from across the pond.
EFL pundit Edward Walker joked: 'Barnsley’s new home kit makes me want to rename them to the South Yorkshire Tykes and chuck them in the old NASL [North American Soccer League]', adding a squeamish face emoji for good measure.
Barnsley's new home kit attracted its fair share of amused and bemused comments on Twitter
Barnsley's models were pictured laughing and joking... in a preview of the reaction to come
Multiple fans on Twitter insisted it was 'one of the worst' kits they've ever seen
Another punter added: 'US Mobile sponsor, stars on the kit.. When are we announcing ourselves as the next MLS expansion team?'
One Twitter user thought it might have taken inspiration from the culinary landscape of America, wondering if it was a 'KFC novelty strip.'
Another condemned the kit: 'It's been sometime since I've seen a kit that bad. It's a joke surely? Looks like it was designed by Team America.'
Racking up almost 500,000 views on Barnsley's Twitter account in the first four hours, the home kit drew cutting criticism from across the social media landscape.
One fan said: 'This is a shocker, one of the worst shirts I’ve seen in a long time.'
Another user backed that up, saying: 'That’s one of the worst kits I’ve ever seen lads.'
The garish star design saw the strip compared to America along with MLS
Another said: 'Barnsley's new kit is so grim they should start the season on minus points.'
An account called RetroShirtsFC, showering their comment in laughing emojis, questioned: 'Surely not right?? How can you lose the Play-Off Final in the 123rd min and it still not be the worst part of your year?'
Even Specsavers got in on the act, simply asking: 'Have you got five minutes'?
Quite a few users thought that the release was so abominable that it warranted a points deduction for next season.
One fan quipped: 'Barnsley's new kit is so grim they should start the season on minus points'.
Fans will get to see the new home kit in action for the first time on 22nd July, when they take to the field in a friendly against Blackburn Rovers.
The first competitive fixture that the kit will see is on 5th August, as the Tykes welcome Port Vale.
